In my last newsletter, we discussed what is a lock-up period. In this newsletter, I focused on why it’s beneficial for investors. So today I want to talk about what are the benefits for founders and the effect it has on future hires. In venture capital, a lock-up period refers to a predetermined period during which certain shareholders, typically founders and employees, are restricted from selling or transferring their shares in a company. The purpose of a lock-up period is to create stability and alignment of interests among shareholders, particularly during critical phases such as fundraising, initial public offerings (IPOs), or mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Let's explore the benefits and effects of lock-up periods for founders and future hires:

Benefits for Founders:

  1. Long-Term Commitment: Lock-up periods encourage founders to remain committed to the company's success over the long term. By restricting the sale of shares, founders are incentivized to work towards building a sustainable and valuable business instead of seeking short-term gains.
